Result of First Opium War:
British victory
Treaty of Nanking
After the signing of the Treaty of Naking, Ch’ing empire added Amoy (Xiamen), Ningpo (Ningbo), Foochow (Fuzhou), Shanghai as additional trade ports. Peking should also pay 21 million and conceded Hong Kong island to British.[1]
Result of Second Opium War:
Franco-British victory
Treaty of Tientsin / Convention of Peking
In the Treaty of Tientsin, four great powers involved, namely Britain, France, Russia, and America. Ch’ing Empire opened more ports and paied more reparations. And foreigners from these countries gained more rights in China.
However, Britain, France, and Russia were not satisfied with their territorial gain and there were the Convention of Peking with Ch’ing. In this convention, Kowloon was leased to Britain and Outer Manchuria were entirely conceded to Russia.
In my opinion, the term “Opium Wars”, which is invented by Western sinophiles and abused by Chinese nationalistic historians, is confusing. It emphasises that China deserves pity, but ignores the weakness and arrogance of Chinese people. “Anglo-Chinese Wars” is better.

Christopher Lee use his experience from WW2 to change some fight scenes with the Lord of the Rings.
By the time of the First Opium War, China had been isolationist for centuries, yet they still considered themselves the greatest and most civilized kingdom on Earth. Little did they know that the European powers had already greatly surpassed them in technological capabilities and industrial capacity. China was in for a rude awakening.
Here are some numbers. I think they speak for themselves.
First Opium War Casualties:
British Personnel: 19,000
Qing Personnel: 200,000
British Casualties: 69 killed, 450 wounded
Qing Casualties: 20,000 killed and wounded
The British killed and wounded more men than they themselves had. That is a telling sign of an enormous defeat. Within two years, the great Chinese civilization had been brought to its knees by a tiny island across the sea
