Durgeshnandini was the first novel written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The Bengali author.achieved excellence with his first novel.Initially, the Bengali novel used Meyeli, the language associated with women’s speech, but this style was replaced by Bankim’s prose which was Sanskritised and at the same time contained more vernacular style.
In Bengal, many historical novels were about Marathas Rajput. These novels produced a sense of a pan-Indian belonging. They imagined the nation to be full of adventure, heroism, romance and sacrifice.
