Separation of Church and State or end of theocratic state was an important outcome of the Age of Reason in the Seventeenth Century and Eighteenth century.
During the middle ages and before the Age of Reason, Church and State were one and the Church and Clergy used to dictate everything in the state. But during the Age of Reason people began to question everything on the basis of reason and logic. The authority of Church and Pope in the affairs of state was questioned as well as it had became a corrupt institution. So the Church was separated from State and religious became a personal and private affair. The new nation-states were mostly secular.
