Explanation:

Once , Sudha Murthy had to travel to Kalahandi. It was neither a town or a city, and was not known for anything special. It was just another part of another tribal district like Mayur Bhunj or Koraput. •They say that before Independence, Kalahandi was ruled by a king. The tribals believed that the king was their caretaker and possessed supreme powers. They were so innocent that they did not believe that kings no longer existed. If a child was orphaned, it is left at the doorstep of the collector’s house. For them the ultimate protector was the raja. •Bhavani Pattanam was the district headquarters of Kalahandi. It is a small town, quite different from other district head quarters. It was such a sleepy place. Sudha Murthy had gone there to meet the head of an NGO who was working tirelessly for the welfare of orphans. Each grey hair on his head told the story of his selfless dedication. In order to serve those children, he had chosen to remain unmarried. • While travelling from Bhubaneshwar to Kesina, Sudha Murthy kept observing the tribal people. The men would carry fresh produce of fruits and the women wore brightly colored sarees, their hair simply knotted with flowers tucked in. Summary (cntd)

5. • Sudha Murthy was accompanied by a person who knew the local language and had agreed to be her interpreter. Knowledge of the local language is most essential when one works at grass- root level. •Sudha Murthy had a thousand questions to ask about these tribal people about their lifestyle and civilisation. They normally lived in groups and were not too rigid about rituals like the ‘ civilised’ people. They are direct in their ways and the concept of individual ownership is rarely found among them. •Sudha Murthy was keen on providing help to them in some ways without threatening their identity. •Sudha Murthy’s interpreter told her that to meet these tribals, She would have to walk two miles, since no car could reach their hamlet. After a long walk, they finally reached a village. She met a woman whose age she could not guess immediately. The woman was about seventy years old but without a single grey hair. Not a single person in the village had a trace of grey hair. Summary (cntd)

6. •Then she meets an old man. By the events he narrates while talking, they conclude that he must be about 104 years old. •While talking with that man, Sudha Murthy asks him, who was ruling the country. To him the country meant Kalahandi. He answers that the company sarcar was ruling the country. By company, he meant the East India Company. •The old man was not aware that India had become independent. •Sudha Murthy shows him some Indian currency and the emblem of Ashok Chakra. He says that it is just a piece of paper and how can one tell who was ruling them by looking at the piece of paper. It is the goriwali rani that is ruling us, he says. • Nothing that Sudha Murthy said could convince him that the Queen was not ruling India. •Then she tells that by using the note, they can buy firewood, lots of saris , bags of salt, matchsticks and even a piece of land. 7. • He says, ‘ For this paper, people fight, go away from their ancestral land, leave the forest and go to the cities. But we have lead a complete life without this piece of paper. Our ancestors did. We are children of God, settled here happily without this piece of paper. This is God’s land. Nobody owns this land. No river is created by us. The rain does not ask our permission. These are gifts of God. How we can “ sell” or “buy” land, I don’t understand. When nothing is yours, then how can you make such transactions? This little paper of yours turns lives upside down.” • Sudha Murthy had no words to answer him. Until that moment, she was convinced that she knew more than him. But this man was aware of deeper, more eternal truths. He knew that nobody owned the land, the mountains or the wind. • Sudha Murthy has a question, Who is more civilised- this wise old man in the Kalahandi forest or those of us with our fingers on the pulse of the internet?
