Rowlatt Act :-

Rowlatt Act was an oppressive act introduced by the British Government in 1919. It gave the Government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. It was also known as Black Act.

The Indians showed disapproval towards this Act :-

1.Gandhiji called for a country wide ‘Hartal’ on 6th April, 1919. But he was arrested.

2.There were disturbances in  Delhi, Ahmedabad and Punjab. In Amritsar, two popular leaders, Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifud-din-Kitchlew were arrested. The people took out a procession in Amritsar to protest against these arrests, and demanded the release of their leaders.

3. A public meeting was announced for the 13th April. 19191, Amritsar against the arrest of their leaders.

4. People gathered there without arms and then General Dyer marched there and killed more than 1,000 people.

5. As the news of the ‘Jallianwala Bagh’ spread crowds took to the streets in many North Indian towns. There were strikes, clashes with the police and attacks on Government buildings.

Rowalt act :- The act was passed by the imperial legislative assembly. The act provided enormous powers to police. The police got the power to arrest anyone without trial. The aim of the act was to repress political activities.

⟹ The reaction of people against the Rowalt act was given below :-

(i) Mahatma Gandhi's reaction :-

Mahatma Gandhi wanted non - violent civil disobedience movement against the unjust law which would start with a hartal on 6th April.

(ii) Rallies and strikes :- Rallies were organized I'm various cities, workers went on strike in railway workshops, and shops closed down.

(iii) Damage to public property :- On 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon peaceful procession, provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices and railway stations.

(iv) Meeting at jallianwala bath :- On 13th April a large crowd gathered in the enclosed ground of jallianwala bagh. To protest against the government's new repressive measures.

(v) United struggle :- Rowalt act had a deep and long lasting impact on people. Both Hindu and Muslim realised a need for a united struggle.
