The protest took a tragic turn on 13 April 1919 in Amritsar, Punjab. Public meetings had banned in Amritsar. But a peaceful crowd of about 10, 000 people had collected at Jallianwala Bagh, a walled garden that had just one exit. The British military commander, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, ordered his soldiers to block the exit and open fire. The firing lasted for about 10 minutes. Hundreds of people were killed and many more were wounded. The massacre shocked Indians all over the country.
