The French society in the Old Regime were divivded into 3 estates - The Clergy(1) , The Nobility(2) , The Commoners(3) . The Clergy and the Nobility enjoyed certain previlages by birth . The third estate suffered the most . Only the members of the 3rd estate , which comprised of 97% of the population of france had to pay taxes . Taxes were levied by the church (called tithes) and also they had to pay direct tax to the govt (called taille) . Also , 60% of the land was owned by the first two estates . Many members of the third estate were landless labourers . Hence , the third estate suffered before the french revolution while the first 2 enjoyed . This was also one of the main causes for the french revolution
