Friction is wasteful at times so why we need to increase it in cases ?

The simplest example where we need to increase friction is when we need to stop a vehicle . If you are going towards a pit , then obviously you need to apply the brakes , brakes increase friction and stop the vehicle . If you dont , well you know what will happen
