Mr Bates, an eminent surgeon in London was Gulliver's master and mentor. Mr Bates helped Gulliver establish as a surgeon. He recommended him to many patients. He even recommended him to be a surgeon to the Swallow, a ship. After Mr Bates's death, his business began to fail. Gulliver didn't like to adopt mean ways of practice medicine. So after consulting his wife, he decided to go to sea. He worked as a surgeon in two ships and made several voyages to East and West Indies.
