Helen's biggest reason to join Radcliffe College was centered in her childhood fascination with Harvard. When she was a little girl, she had visited Wellesley and surprised her friend with the announcement that one day she would go college and that too Harvard. When asked why she would not go to Wellesley, she had replied that only girls went there. The thought of going to college took root in her heart and developed into an earnest desire which impelled her to enter into competition for a degree with girls who had the power of vision and hearing. It led her to oppose many true and wise friends of hers. When she had left New York, an idea had fixed itself in her heart and it was eventually decided that she would go to Cambridge. This was the nearest approach she could get to Harvard and to the fulfillment of her childhood Declaration.
