Helen’s father was most loving and indulgent, devoted to his home, seldom leaving his family, except during the hunting season. He very fondly led Helen from tree to tree, vine to vine, and his eager delight in whatever pleased Helen. After Helen had slowly started understanding words, her father would try and clumsily spell the words of various stories onto her hand. And nothing pleased him more than to have Helen repeat the story to him at an opportune moment. Helen’s first great personal sorrow was losing her father. He died from a grave illness, while Helen was away.
Helen was extremely close to her mother. After Helen’s recovery from a severe illness which left her without the ability to speak, hear or see, she grew increasingly restless and tyrannical in her parents’ home. Relatives and friends of the Kellers felt that Helen should be institutionalised. Kate Keller, however, kept her focus. She wanted to be the best mother she could be to her increasingly irritable and unmanageable daughter. As a child when Helen was unable to understand things in comparison to others, she would feel frustrated, and become wild and beat her hands and legs about, until she became exhausted and clutched onto her mother’s skirt. During this time her mother would cradle Helen in her arms and give her a lot of comfort. Right before her death her mother had written to Helen that she loves Helen, and promised her if she were to die, she would see her in the world to come. After Kate Keller’s death, Helen missed her mother dearly.
