Indian economy is dependent on Agriculture but the contribution of agriculture to India’s GDP is steadily declining. The success of Green Revolution of 1960s is well-documented. It led to the use of input-intensive techniques and seeds for the first time in the Indian agriculture industry. However, post the Green Revolution, the country witnessed Beej Bachao Andolan (Save the seeds movement), which sought to influence farmers to conserve traditional seeds and to go back to the indigenous way of farming. This movement is not as well-known as Green Revolution but has led to conservation of many lost varieties of rice, rajma (kidney beans) and other crops. Beej Bachao Andolan Movement was led by the stalwarts of Chipko Movement, which was launched to save the trees and environment in the state of Uttarakhand in India. I would like to work on a story on the impact of Beej Bachao Andolan and how it continues to inspire farmers to adopt indigenous methods of farming to the benefit of soil fertility, sustainable agriculture and local traditions. The story (around 1000 words) will get inputs from the leaders of the movement as well as the farmers who have adopted traditional methods after being disappointed by modern way of farming.
