Allama Iqbal known as the national poet of Pakistan as well as a freedom fighter during the early days of Jinnah's struggles has indeed done practical efforts for the Muslim Ummah.

His greatest and most often mentioned effort was that of making the Muslims realize a need for a separate nation. Even though Sir Syed Ahmad gave the two nation theory, Iqbal was the one to make Muslims realize that it was indeed time to wake up from their long slumber and stand up for their rights. He helped the Muslims realize that they had to join together in unity against the outsiders.

A close study of Iqbal's works show that, for Iqbal, the political ideology of Pakistan would primarily be composed of two basic element, the Quranic concept of the universal Millah (community) and his concept of the Self (Khudi).

It was within such an ideological framework that Iqbal was confronted with the problem of redifining the political status of the Indian Muslims in accordance with the contemporary political terminology.

To achieve this objective, he expounded the Two-Nation theory as the basis for claiming the right of self-determination of the Indian Muslims for carving out a separate Muslim State.
