Answer:
- Though the fact that the then Bengal with a humongous population of 78 million was difficult to be administered is true, it was not the real motive behind the Bengal Partition of 1905.
- The City of Calcutta enjoyed the status of Capital for whole British India. Not only that Calcutta was the Capital but also was the nerve centre of Indian National Congress.
- This did not go well with the British, who saw in Indian National Congress the determination to achieve Independence.
- Lord Curzon was the then Viceroy of India.
- And so, he decided to put an end to this problem by setting out 2 objectives namely,
- “Dethrone and Weaken Calcutta” from its position as the centre from which the Congress Party was manipulated throughout Bengal, and indeed, the whole of India. Weaken the Indian National Congress.
- While the first objective was achieved by dividing Bengal and reducing the Bengali speaking population to a minority, the second objective was achieved by using the dirty “Divide and Rule” approach.
- However, the partition was cancelled later.
