 It was believed by the Europeans that they had the most advanced civ. and it was their duty to civilise the backward and the most primitive of nations by exploiting their resources. Likewise in the case of the Vietnamese , the instant of production of rubber and rice is one of the other examples of civiising mission. Others include :

(i) Education was one of the ways to civilise the natives.

(ii) The French needed an educated local labour force but they feared that education might create problems.

(iii) To consolidate their power, the French had to counter the Chinese influence.

(iv) So they systematically dismantled the traditional educational system and established French schools for the Vietnamese.
