Answer:

There were two main alliances in Europe prior to WWI: the Triple Alliance—Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy—and the opposing Triple Entente—the Soviet Union, Britain, and France. These alliances are what caused the war to escalate from what should have only been regional conflict into a war throughout Europe and more.

As you know, the war was mainly caused by the assassination of Austria-Hungary's Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Bosnian-Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary, fearing it was a political assassination ordered by the Serbian government, declared war on Serbia.

Russia in turn, joined the war to help Serbia as it oversees itself as protector of the Slavs. The Austrians brought in their ally Germany to assist them in the war while France joined in as it was Russia's ally, but also because they wanted to get revenge at Germany for a previous war.

Germany attacked France through Belgium, a neutral country, to get through the French defences. This caused Belgium's ally Britain to join the war.
