According to the data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city recorded an average AQI of around 154 during the day and remained in the ‘moderate’ level. The air quality dropped to ‘hazardous’ category in the evening on account of bursting of crackers, as well as low temperature and wind speed.
The city has seven Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations, and an analysis of data during the evening on Thursday showed that the AQI at all the seven stations saw a spike from 7 pm onwards.
The increase in the AQI is attributed to the bursting of firecrackers during Diwali celebration and the smog formed due to low temperature and poor wind speed that allowed the accumulation of pollutants.
The Tamil Nadu government had issued an advisory on bursting of crackers and had allowed only green crackers during two fixed time slots- 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm. However, many people defied the guidelines and burst crackers after the stipulated hours.
