The attitude of the early nationalists towards freedom of the press was as follows -

• The early nationalists were always looking for the integration of the Indian population as one nation, against the British rule. And they knew that the mass communication mediums like newspapers can significantly help them to bring integration among the population.

• That's why, the newspapers of regional languages were getting published everywhere, under the influences of the Indian nationalists.

• Looking this situation as a massive threat, the British government had established the "Vernacular Press Act", in the year of 1878. This act was established to kill the growth of the newspaper and to reduce the negative publicity against the British government.

• The nationalists also protested this unfair act and this act was later disabled in the year of 1881.

• So,as a conclusion we can say that, the newspaper was always an important asset for the early nationalists of our country.
