Explanation:

1   List the electrons by the similar energy groupings (subshells). The notation is:

  • Layer Number
  • Subshell Name
  • Count in that Subshell

2  Use the basic order - called aufbau

3  Place them in order of filling with commas between.

4  Remember aufbau exceptions. Mostly in the transition metals. You get 3s2 often as 3s1.

5  Maybe, my work to resolve those exceptions will become peer-reviewed, but until then the above is the procedure.
