The basic reason for the policy of appeasement would be that the British and French were in need of preparation to fight the Axis and since there was a promise made which would soon be broken the Allies believed there would be no future incursions. Basically the Allies needed time and appeasement to the demands was the best way to get it without sounding too aggressive when they were not ready for war. As it was the Allies were not ready but it would have been far worse if this appeasement did not occur.
