When the British government in India brought changes in the forest laws, the life of the tribal people affected badly. Various tribes were directly connected to the forests in India hence, the new laws and policies affected their lives directly. In order to develop railways and to control the tribal groups easily, the British government took control of the forests and declared those forests as Reserved Forests for they produced timber. Therefore, tribal people (who lived in these forests) were forced to leave the forests; they were banned to enter the reserved forests.

When some villages were allowed to stay on in the reserved forests, they were known as forest villages. They were allowed to stay on the condition that they worked free for the forest department in cutting and transporting trees and protecting the forest from fires.
