There already is a good enough answer written for this question yet I would only like to add that though the elections were indirect i.e. majority membera were elected by the provincial assembly just like rajya sabha is elected, the key diff was the voters.

India did not have universal adult franchise. Only few indians could vote and by that i mean less than 10% provided they serve the eligibility criteria like income and education levels etc. Hence the provincial assemblies themselves were not representative bodies let alone the constituent assembly. Yet they were perhaps the best of the lot that India had to choose from and they hv obviously done a marvelous job at framing the constitution!
