The estates general was a political body to which the three estates (clergy, nobility and 3rd estate, commonly consist of peasants and other workers) sent their representatives in the general assembly.

There was a rule i.e, all the estate have one-one vote but people of 3rd estate were comparatively more than Clergy and Nobility and demanded that each person of estate should have single vote.

This demand was rejected by king.

Estate General :-

  • In France of the old regime , the monarchs didn't had the power to impose any tax according to his will alone .
  • Rather , he had to call a meeting of estate General which would then pass his proposal of new taxes .
  • The estate General was a political body to which the three estates sent their representatives .

Demand of the 3rd Estate the Louise XVI reject :-

  • Voting in the estate General in the past had been conducted according to the principal that each estate had one vote .
  • But the members of the 3rd assembly demanded that voting now be conducted as a whole , where each member should have one vote .
  • This was one of the democratic principles put forward by the philosophers like Roseau in his book " The Social Contract " .
