Louisa Mebbin brought to the attention that the goat was killed by a bullet, and there was no trace of a bullet wound on the tiger. The wrong animal had been shot, and the tiger after hearing the shot had died of a heart failure as it was very old.  When Mrs. Packletide heard of this she was greatly annoyed, but the secret was kept because villagers did not know about it and Loisa was a paid companion.
