The "Go East" (Dong Du) Movement occurred among Vietnamese nationalists (usually cited as 1907-1908) in an effort to modernize Vietnam with the view of deposing the French rule and restoring the Nguyen dynasty. Approximately 300 intellectuals went to study in Japan following the Japanese success against Russia in 1907.
The immediate results were unsuccessful. The Vietnamese were expelled by Japan.
However, the long term results were to give focus to the desire to overthrow the French which, in turn, lead to the Vietnamese War.
