  • The Indian soldiers could only reach highest rank of the ‘Subedar’ till 1857.
  • Most of  Indians were called as the ‘Coolie Soldiers’.
  • The higher posts, such as the officers & generals, were reserved only for the Britishers.
  • Subedar was second-highest position of the Indian officer in military forces of the British India which was ranked below the "British commissioned officers" & above "Local non--commissioned officers".
  • The Indian officers were promoted to this rank on basis of the longevity of the service & individual merit.
  • A Subedar was the senior to Jemadar & junior to Subedar-major in Indian Military under the British rule.
