Mrs Umney was an old lady. she was the housekeeper of the canterville chase. she used to live in the ville.
she welcomed the Otis family at the ville when they arrived. she was retained in her present job by Mrs. Otis . she had laid tea for them . when they sat down for tea, Mrs. Otis saw a red stain on the floor near the place. she told Mrs. Umney that something had been split on the floor . Mrs. Umney replied that it was the blood of lady Eleanore de Canterville, who was murdered on that spot by her husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, in 1575.
Sir Simon survived for nine years and disappeared suddenly under very mysterious circumstances. His body could never be seen since that time. But his guilt spirit still haunted the house. This bloodstain has been there since then. she also told them that it could not be removed.
