it was due to different causes done by the british such as:

economical cause: Many Indians felt that the Company was asking for heavy tax from the locals. This included an increase in the taxation on land. This seems to have been a very important reason for the spread of the rebellion.

religious causes:British were accompanied by prohibitions on Indian religious customs and were seen as steps towards forced conversion to Christianity.

The rebellion was, literally, started over a gun. Sepoys throughout India were issued with a new rifle, the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket in this partcular gun the sepoys had to bite of a greased paper which was made of pigs and cows before loading the gun. which made the hindus angry as they considered cow as sacred and muslims considered pigs as dirty.
