Economic and colonial rivalries had been propelling Europe towards a war. The assasination of Archduke Frans Ferdinand and his wife on 28 June 1914, was the immediate provocation for World War I.
The first World War started in the Balkans in late July 1914 and ended in November 1918. It was fought between two rival sets of powers. Germany and Austria-Hungary were on one side and Russia, France, Serbia and Great Britain were on the other side.
