Between 1880 and 1881, the British colonizers were accidentally responsible for a cattle disease called rinderpest to get manifested. This was one of the first tragedies that struck the Maasai community as it resulted in the loss of 80 percent stock. The next setback was when the community was forced to relocate to a reserve located in South Kenya. Last but not the least, the British encouraged the Maasais to adopt their European lifestyle without giving up their traditions. This resulted in a lot of contradictions that in turn isolated the Maasai community and forced them to find ways of developing on their own. In course of time, famine, drought, intratribal warfare, and cattle diseases weakened the Maasai community to a great extent.
