James Mill split Indian history into Hindu history, Periods of Muslims and Christians. This book focused on religious lines that the Hindus ruled and others ruled for a time. The   Christians or Muslims process then came (i.e., British). His mentality was colonial and he felt that dians were not civilised. Europeans, he thought, were superior. Therefore  by way of his periodization , he tried to split people with their specific indentify which was untrue

Explanation:

  • A History of British India was published in three volumes by James Mill, Scottish economist and political philosopher, in 1817. His history was split into three stages – Muslim, Hindu and British. Many scholars have concluded that Indian history can not be periodise on the grounds of the religion of the rulers.
  • For example, when the Hindu kings ruled in ancient India, many religions existed peacefully. The same is also true for medieval India. It was not correct to periodise medieval India as Muslim History because people belonging to different faiths existed during this time. Such periodisation which was based on the religion of the rulers suggests that the lives, practices and culture of the other people do not matter
  • Thousands of Hindu kings existed during Muslim rule. The same applied to India during the Christian era, where there were thousands of local Hindu and Muslim princely states. Anyway, it was not correct to mention 'Hindu' or 'Muslim' for any period in history. Similarly it was not right to characterize an era was by the ethnicity of then kings. Therefore, Mill 's Indian history periodisation was not up to the standard.
