Known as the Democracy Movement of 2006, it was a political uprising of a major scale, against the direct and undemocratic rule of King Gyanendra of Nepal. It was popularly known as the ‘Jan Andolan’ meaning ‘People’s Movement’.
The major demand of the rebel Maoists who spearheaded the movement, was to form a Constituent Assembly and abolish Monarchy, completely.
As a result of the movement, in May 2006, the Parliament voted unanimously to discharge the King of most of his powers.
