In an effort to deal with the poor, the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601 was enacted. The Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601required each parish to select two Overseers of the Poor. It was the job of the Overseer to set a poor tax for his or her parish based on need and collect money from landowners.
