In Bengal there was a militant revolutionary organisation known as Anushilan Samiti. It believed in using extreme and violent methods for the independence of India.

Maniktala Secret Society, a secret revolutionary organisation developed from the Anushilan Samiti. The organisation was lead by Barin Ghosh, the brother of revolutioary leader Aurobindo Ghosh. It was operated from the underground conspiratorial center at Maniktala area of Calcutta. The organisation believed in armed struggle. It challenged the British rule by engaging in political assassinations, bombings and politically motivated violence. It had links with all the secret organisations of the country. It weakened after its leaders were arrested and sentenced to jail in Alipore Bombing Conspiracy in 1908.
