A.  to force the Soviet Union's troops out of Afghanistan and destroy their supporters is your best answer.

In the beginning years of Al-Qaeda, their main mission was to eradicate Soviet control from Afghanistan. Because of the Cold War, which pitted the US against the USSR, the CIA supplied Al-Qaeda with weapons to help them continue the fight. With fighting spirit, knowledge of the terrain inside the country, and wide-support, the Al-Qaeda was able to defeat the USSR. The USSR, on the other hand, was plagued with problems both in the military and logistically, and did not have large knowledge of the terrain of the country, as well as who they were truly fighting against. In a sense, as described by historians, the Soviet-Afghanistan War was the USSR's "Vietnam War", and led to the defeat of the USSR. Following the disastrous campaign, the USSR then loss most of their economic, military, & political powers, and with that, the USSR fell.
