Pope Gregory I is best known for his efforts to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. In 596 AD, Gregory sent Augustine of Canterbury to what is now England with the task of converting its people. Gregory also launched several other missions to convert some of the other Germanic tribes of Northern Europe.
