The Congress of the United States adopted the Land Ordinance  on May 20, 1785 when the government did not have the power to raise revenue by direct taxation of the citizens of the country.


The main goal of the ordinance was to  raise money through selling land of the colonies acquired from Britain.

On 20th May, 1785 The Land Ordinance was adopted by the United States Congress.


Before this ordinance, the congress did not have the power to collect direct tax from the citizens, and after adopting this ordinance, the congress can collect the taxes from different resources such as land selling.


Apart from that, it helped to promote the educational system in newly acquired territory.
