What was the nature of the Revolt of 1857? Was it just a Sepoy Mutiny?

revolt of 1857 was 1st war of independence and it was the mass movement as everyone participated in this war...No...bcoz whole India participated in this war not just sepoys

The british historians termed it as a purely military revolt or sepoy mutiny while the Indians regarded it as the first war of independence
