A group of pilgrims assembled at the Tabard Inn in Southwark.
They were going to the shrine of the murdered St. Thomas à Becket at Canterbury.
The tedium of the journey each pilgrim told two stories on the way and on the way back. Thus each pilgrim told four stories.
This was the framework of the poem.
Chaucer string the stories together- an idea got from Boccacio’s Deccameron.
Some of the tales were written earlier by Chaucer.
