The unions agreed to sign the agreement if the government agreed to increase the wages in two instalments of 15% each in 2019. The strike witnessed staff in over 15,000 schools and kindergartens striking due to frustrations of polish teachers as a result of longstanding policies of neglect and austerity directed at public schools. The government has chosen to fight a war of attrition however some local governments have declared to compensate teachers from the municipal budgets.
