Having suffered heavy defeat from the facists, wanted to hold talks with the Indian leaders Sir Stafford Cripps, a British Prime Minister was sent to hold the talks with Indian leaders. It was called the cripps mission. But his officers dominion status for India was rejected by both the Congress and the Muslim League. Gandhiji called it "a post dated cheque on a failing blank."
