The reason behind .Hug the Trees Movement. was to stop the plan of cutting down the forest trees near Reni village by logging contractors.
During this movement, when the contractor.s workers appeared in the forest, the women of the village hugged the tree trunks, thus preventing the workers from felling the trees.
The result was that the contractor had to withdraw ultimately and the government of India was forced to give a fresh thought to the proper use of forest produce.
