It was in Surat where Congress got split. This session was presided over by. Dr. Rash Behari Ghosh.
The Extremist camp was led by Lal Bal and Pal and the moderate camp was led by Gopal Krishna Gokhle.
The main reasons were the methodology adopted by the moderates and the Extremists.
The moderates wanted peaceful settlements by delebrations, petetions etc but the extremists believed in agitation, strikes and boycotts to force their demands.
Ultimately it got spilit.
It was United again by Lucknow Pact in 1916.
