Answer:

I’d say the relationship is indirect, at best.

Explanation:

The main argument to be made is that the Reformation broke the hold the Roman Catholic Church had on intellectual life in Western Europe. The Renaissance Church dominated academia (it ran all the universities), art (nearly all paintings and plays of the period were devotional), and publishing (most books came out of monastery scriptoria). This grip had started to slip with the invention of the printing press, but the Protestant Reformation broke this grip decisively and permanently.

Some of the consequences were negative, in particular a century of Wars of Religion that killed millions. But one outcome was the opening of space for intellectual discussion and innovation. Both sides of the Protestant/Catholic divide included argument and debate as tools in their struggle. This promoted an atmosphere of questioning the old ways and an opening of minds to new ideas and new technology. The discovery of the New World also contributed to this new open-mindedness.

The Industrial Revolution relied on this open-mindedness. Many of its innovations threatened established interests. In a pre-Reformation Europe, this would have allowed those interests to petition the Church to suppress these innovations as dangerous to the existing religious and social order. Contrast Europe’s progress to that of Imperial China, which invented many key technologies like printing and gunpowder. But the Emperor and his mandarins feared social change and kept those inventions from becoming keys to new industries. In Europe, the dethroning of the Catholic Church removed such institutional barriers, making for fertile ground where inventions could thrive.
