Austria played a very major role in unification of Italy and Germany. In 1859, for the unification of Italy, Count Cavour formed a diplomatic alliance with France, and drove out Austrian forces from the northern Italy, regaining back the territory of Lombardy and Venetia.

For the unification of Germany, in 1862, Otto Van Bismarck, signed a non-attack agreement with France, and defeated Austrian forces and regained the territory of Tyrol, Alpine regions of Bohemia, Sudetenland and north-western parts of Germany.
