The eighteenth century witnessed the emergence of social groups termed the middle class who earned their wages through an expanding overseas trade and selling goods like woollen and silk textiles which were either exported or sold to the richer members of society. These people were well educated and believed that no particular group in the society should be given special privileges. Rather a person's position in the society should be determined by his merit . These ideas envisaging a society based on freedom and democratic rights were put forward by philosophers such as John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau. In his book " The two treaties of government " Locke sought to refute the doctrine of the divine and the absolute right of the monarch. Rousseau carried the idea forward by proposing a form of an government based on a social contract between the people and their representatives. In " The spirit of the laws " Montesquieu suggested a division of power between the government that is, between the legislature , executive and judiciary, instead of the power being concentrated in the hands of a few.
