It was a symbolic overthrow of royal power because the French people were starving, overtaxed, powerless over the royal decrees that Louis was daily reigning down upon them and they had two choices - continue to take the abuse or revolt and they chose to revolt. Some believe it was inspired by the American Revolution to go against a royal ruler in favor of popular rule but that could simply be a later interpretation of the general situation. By overcoming the site of royal punishment and imprisonment, they sent a very clear message to their king and queen that their rule was over. Relly bad things were begun after this symbolic act and the bloodbath that followed was not to endear the people of the time to being supportive of their independence. It was like our American “shot heard ’round the world,” Declaration of Independence or the defeat of British troops by non-traditional means in the war.
