It's importance can be first felt when we come to know that they were a gift to the Bishop and his sister Persome by their mother, when the latter was in her death bed.

The Bishop has sentimental association with the candlesticks as they are his mother's gift to him while she was on her death bed. He doesn't wanted to part with them. They reminded him of her. But when the convict received them as a gift, they became symbols of hope and life. The convict could now believe in the goodness of life and lead an honest life.

Hope this helps!!!
