When the three men reach Reading, J. takes the sculls. Very soon George sees something black floating on the water. Soon it is found to be the dead body of a woman. Later, they come to know of her tragic story.She had been deceived in love. Her family and friends had closed their doors at her. She was in a poor financial condition did not have enough to support herself and her daughter. Unable to manage any longer, one day, she gave a chocolate to her child and left the house. She wandered in the woods at Goring till evening, and then drowned herself in the river. This is how she had met her tragic end.
