Subsidiary alliance system is defined as a system of ruling a dominated nation without actually annexing them.

It was a non-intervention policy.

It was introduced in India in the 19th century by the then governor general of India,
Lord Wellesley.

Its main features were:-
1.The native ruler who became a subsidiary ally of the English would be protected by the Company's government against foreign attack.

2.The native ruler had to maintain a force under the British command and pay a subsidy for its maintenance to the Company.

3.He was forbidden to negotiate with any foreign power without the knowledge of the English.
